Cahill in line for Chelsea return after Rudiger injury

Chelsea fans’ hearts must have sank along with the German international as they watched Antonio Rudiger plummet to the floor against Liverpool on Sunday.

The central defender had sustained a knee injury that would force him off, requiring members of the Blues’ medical staff to support him into the dressing room.

Set for a scan to determine the severity of the ailment on Monday, the Evening Standard have revealed that Gary Cahill is set to be welcomed back into the fold at Stamford Bridge.

The veteran has been almost totally excluded by Maurizio Sarri this season, with the 33-year-old’s last appearance coming way back in November.

Andreas Christensen was brought on from the bench against Liverpool, but looked far from assured as the visitors were defeated 2-0 by the high-flying Reds.

With an impending Europa League quarter-final second-leg against Slavia Prague on Thursday, Sarri may well turn to the vastly more experienced Cahill to get them over the line and deliver them to the semi-finals.

Success in the Europa League may well become imperative for Chelsea, should they fail to finish in a Champions League qualification spot.
