Nice president confirms Giroud interest

OGC Nice president Gauthier Ganaye has confirmed that the club are keen to sign Olivier Giroud from Chelsea this summer.

The Blues have triggered their one-year extension in the Frenchman’s contract at Stamford Bridge as his current deal was due to expire at the end of the season.

Giroud was set to walk away from Chelsea on a free transfer, but now the London club are able to demand a fee for their experienced striker.

Speaking to French news outlet Telefoot, as cited in a report from GFFN, Ganaye admitted that he is an admirer of the 2018 World Cup winner, but conceded that he could be “too expensive”.

The president said:

[Giroud] is coming to the end of his contract, he is still performing well at his age. Why not, I will tell you that it is possible… [But] very expensive.

Giroud has not played an especially involved role for Chelsea in their Premier League campaign so far but has been in exceptional form for them in the Europa League.

The former Arsenal man leads the way as the competition’s top goalscorer, with 10 to his name already.
