Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are in the race to sign Thomas Meunier from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, according to claims from RMC Sport.
The French news outlet claims that the Belgium international could be on his way out of the Ligue 1 club at the end of the season, and interested parties are beginning to circle ahead of a possible move.
Meunier, who PSG reportedly value at a fee worth €30 million, has just over one year remaining on his current contract in France and could be keen to seek pastures new this summer.
The 27-year-old, who had previously been a pivotal player in Thomas Tuchel’s side, has not featured regularly throughout the campaign, making just 20 Ligue 1 appearances in yet another title-winning season for the French giants.
Meunier is a man in demand, it seems, and Chelsea will need to fend off competition from their Premier League rivals if they are to land the defender.
Maurizio Sarri has a plethora of right-backs at his disposal, however. Cesar Azpilicueta and Davide Zappacosta have featured this season, while Victor Moses and Reece James will return from their loan spells in the summer.
Why signing Meunier is not a necessity for Chelsea
At €30 million, Meunier would cost a significant sum. It is questionable whether or not Chelsea need to spend this on yet another right-back.
Chance for James
Reece James has been phenomenal for Wigan Athletic this season on loan. The youngster’s hard work and consistency have earned him the chance to act as Azpilicueta’s deputy next season, and signing Meunier would put an obstacle between him and the first-team squad.
No clear upgrade
Azpilicueta has had an underwhelming season by his high standards but remains an exceptional player. Meunier would likely be signed to replace the Spaniard, but he isn’t a clear upgrade.
Other pressing areas
Of all the areas in the Chelsea squad that need work this summer, right-back comes pretty low down on the list. The club must focus their efforts on the more pressing positions that need to be bolstered this summer.
