Chelsea secure Champions League qualification

Chelsea have secured their place in the Champions League next season following their win over Watford and Arsenal’s draw against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Blues moved five points clear of fifth place earlier on Sunday after defeating the Hornets 3-0.

In a comprehensive victory for Maurizio Sarri’s side, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain all found the back of the net in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful.

The win put Chelsea up to 71 points, five ahead of Arsenal, who then faced Brighton knowing that only a win would ensure that they could catch their London rivals before the season ends next weekend.

However, Brighton were able to hold the Gunners to a 1-1 draw. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a penalty to open the scoring for the hosts at the Emirates Stadium, but Glenn Murray also dispatched a spot-kick in the second half to see the spoils shared.

Chelsea’s place in the top four is now confirmed, and they will hope to finish above Tottenham Hotspur, who sit in fourth.
