Chelsea confirm Giroud’s contract extension

Chelsea have confirmed that striker Olivier Giroud has signed a new one-year extension at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by the club’s official website, the Frenchman will remain at the club for a further year.

Giroud had been previously been out of contract this summer, but the Blues held an option to extend the deal by another year.

The Frenchman has been out of favour this season, both for Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain at different stages of the campaign.

However, with a transfer ban looming, the club have been eager to keep hold of the player.

There were said to be several interested teams in France, but the club have convinced him into staying, despite the lack of game time this season.

With concerns of Gonzalo Higuain’s long-term future at the club, Giroud will be hoping to play more regularly next season.

Chelsea are yet to confirm if the former will remain in London beyond the summer.
