Chelsea are only able to sign Mateo Kovacic on a permanent deal if they complete the signing this month.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea can only sign Kovacic if they do so before his loan spell with the club comes to an end.
Kovacic joined Chelsea on a season-long loan from Real Madrid last summer, with the midfielder poised to return to Spain at the end of this month.
This means that Chelsea have to decide this month whether they want to sign Kovacic on a permanent basis.
The report claims that Chelsea are expected to start their two-window transfer ban this summer, which means that they are unable to bring in any new signings – aside from Kovacic.
Christian Pulisic, however, will be like a new signing when he arrives at the club next month. The American international joined Chelsea in January but was loaned straight back to Borussia Dortmund.
