According to reports in Italy, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has already spoken to Napoli striker Dries Mertens about the possibility of the Belgian making a summer move to Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old is out of contract in the summer and as such, he will be able to move on a free transfer in the summer and it appears that Lampard would like to have him as part of his squad.

Mertens is an experienced Champions League player and he’ll still be hoping to win that competition this season when football resumes. Napoli drew the first leg of their Round of 16 clash with Barcelona 1-1 and those who would like to predict if they’ll make it to the quarter-finals could use the betfair mobile app to make their selection.

Chelsea were hammered by Bayern Munich in their first-leg tie with Bayern Munich and they looked very inexperienced at times, so it makes sense for them to be chasing Mertens.

Lampard is obviously keen to bring through young players to develop but they will still need some older heads to guide them and with the futures of both Willian and Olivier Giroud still uncertain, Mertens could be a great player to come in and help both on and off the field.
