Prior to last night’s victory against Rennes in the Champions League, Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz was confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19 by Head Coach Frank Lampard.
Some eyebrows may have been raised upon discovering his omission from the starting lineup but Lampard quickly confirmed the news and said the player is undergoing a period of self-isolation.
The 21-year-old’s absence wasn’t felt on the night as the Blues cruised to a 3-0 win over the Ligue 1 side thanks to a Timo Werner brace and a Tammy Abraham strike.
Should he recover well, Havertz will be in self-isolation for 14 days from the date of the positive test, meaning the former Bayer Leverkusen man will miss Saturday’s clash with Sheffield United and is likely not to go away on international duty with Germany – somethin which one supporter described as a “bright side” to the player’s diagnosis.
The Blues travel to Newcastle United after the international break, at which point Havertz should have returned to training.
