Former Chelsea Favourite Says Tammy Abraham Is A ‘Great Problem’

Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has described striker Tammy Abraham as a ‘great problem’ for Blues manager Frank Lampard.

Abraham bagged his third goal of the 2020/21 campaign during Wednesday night’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Rennes in the Champions League group stages.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Cole said: “It’s a great problem for Frank, all the front players are scoring and making a case, and the midfielders are getting on the ball. Tammy has given Frank something to think about.”

“He kept at it and his movement was good. He didn’t do it in the first half but his goal was not easy to take.”

Following the influx of summer attacking signings, the 23-year-old may have feared for his place in the side, but after 11 appearances already this season, the England international is more than holding his own at Stamford Bridge.

Having now seen the front three of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Abraham together in consecutive comprehensive victories, Lampard may well be close to settling on his first-choice attacking trio.

The Blues seem to be getting the most out of Werner from the left, whilst Ziyech is a natural cutting in from the right.

Abraham is of a different ilk to the wide duo, offering a more physical presence through the middle which gives Lampard’s side more than one way of breaking down opposition defences.

With 21 Premier League goals to his name including an impressive 15 last term, Abraham certainly deserves a chance to show is he worthy of a place amongst the new-look squad at the Bridge. Up to now, it’s one he is taking.

matchday.
