N’Golo Kante Says Chelsea Are ‘Well Placed’ To Mount Title Challenge

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has stated in an interview with French outlet TF1 that the Blues are “well placed” to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Frank Lampard’s side were in fine form heading into the current international break, leaving them just three points off Leicester City at the summit of the Premier League.

Lampard has overseen a major overhaul in the Chelsea squad over the summer and the signs of progression have been positive; and Kante, a two-time Premier League champion, believes the Blues are heading in the right direction once more.

He said: “I think we have signed a fair amount of new players and what we are trying to do is to maintain Chelsea’s standards, win titles and be at the top in England. We are well placed at the moment, I hope we will continue in this vein.”

Signed from then-champions Leicester City during the summer of 2016, Kante helped the Blues to their last league success in 2016/17 during his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Given the unpredictable nature of the Premier League so far this season, it’s well within the realms of possibility that Chelsea could mount a serious title challenge in 2020/21.

Coming into the season with a mammoth points gap to bridge on Manchester City and Liverpool in particular, as well as a host of new players who would likely need time to adapt to the league, any thoughts of winning the league at the outset of the campaign may have seemed farfetched.

However, given City’s less than convincing start and the major injury crisis at title holders Liverpool, Lampard – and indeed World Cup winner Kante – have every right to fancy their chances of ending Chelsea’s four-year wait for domestic supremacy.
