Chelsea Set To Extend Thiago Silva’s Stay at Stamford Bridge

Experienced central defender Thiago Silva has made a huge impact since joining Chelsea as a free agent following his move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.

The 36-year-old has impressed so much during his short time in west London that the club are already considering extending the Brazilian’s stay beyond this season, according to Sky Sports.

Silva arrived on an initial one-year deal with an option to extend for a second season and it seems he has done enough before Christmas to convince the club and Frank Lampard that he is worthy of a prolonged stay at Stamford Bridge.

According to Sky Sports, negotiations are yet to get underway but officials at the club are looking to begin discussions as early as January. Indeed, the manager chirped that “he has been brilliant” following a strong display in the recent win over Sheffield United.

Since making his Blues debut as part of the defence which shipped three goals in the first half against West Brom a couple of months ago, Chelsea have conceded just once in four league games with Silva in the line-up.

Lampard’s men sit third in the table after nine games and take on league leaders Tottenham on Sunday with the chance to go top.

In his nine appearances as a Blue so far, Silva has proved he still has plenty to offer at the top level after some doubts when the signing was confirmed in the summer.

At the start of next season, the 89-cap Brazil veteran will turn 37 and may see his appearances wane somewhat as he could find it increasingly difficult to play week in, week out.

However, for certain fixtures when Lampard feels his know-how and experience could be invaluable, keeping Silva in the squad can only be a positive.
