Chelsea have fierce competition in race to land ‘sensational’ name
Emerging reports have suggested that Chelsea won’t be alone in their quest to sign Milan Skriniar with the Premier League champions also in the hunt.
The Daily Star have named Manchester City among the potential suitors alongside the Blues and Tottenham for the Inter Milan centre-back.
Skriniar found himself as the subject of interest from PSG throughout the summer but remained at the San Siro, since starting all nine games for his current employers so far this term.
However, with the 27-year-old seeing his £90k-per-week contract expiring at the end of the current season, his future is up in the air and while Chelsea are in the race, it appears that City are also now interested in acquiring the Slovakian.
According to the Daily Star, City are expected to target another centre-back next summer despite bringing in Manuel Akanji on deadline day.
It stresses that a move makes sense considering Nathan Ake was tipped to leave the club and especially if the Inter colossus is available on a free transfer.
However, the same source suggests that if Chelsea’s ‘late approach’ to sign Josko Gvardiol is anything to go by, then they too are still looking to bring in defensive reinforcements, having already paid an initial £70m for Wesley Fofana as well as signing Kalidou Koulibaly in the off-season.
Skriniar is likely to attract some big names next summer and it seems as if they are already starting to form a queue, with Tottenham also in the mix, and it isn’t hard to see why.
The in-demand centre-half was previously hailed as ‘sensational’ by Serie A expert David Amoyal, having become a key part of the Nerazzurri playing more minutes than any outfielder at the club last season.
He boasted the best pass success rate in the side (92.9%), which would make him a more than assured option for Graham Potter, who tends to play a possession-based style of football, but it will be interesting to see if the Blues can come out on top of this race.
