The Telegraph writer Matt Law has claimed that Chelsea are tracking Christopher Nkunku this season.

Last term, the 24-year-old exploded in his new role as a second striker at RB Leipzig, scoring 35 goals and producing a further 20 assists in just 52 appearances in all competitions.

The versatile attacker caught the eye of some of Europe’s elite clubs as a result, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain all credited with an interest. Formerly of the French club, The Independent reported that Nkunku’s current employers would only sanction a deal if they were offered £100m.

However, no such move materialised and the 24-year-old signed a new contract with Die Roten Bullen until 2026.

Chelsea watching Nkunku

With his sell-on value now protected, it could take a figure close to the previously reported £100m to sign the eight-cap France sensation, but that doesn’t appear to have put Chelsea off.

According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, the Blues have been ‘watching’ the Leipzig gem this season.

He seems to be firmly on the club’s radar, and they ought to have been impressed by his performances this term.

Nkunku still red-hot

Picking up from where he left off in the previous campaign, Nkunku has been directly involved in seven goals throughout 11 matches so far in 2022/23.

Hailed as a ‘superstar’ by journalist Robin Bairner, the £72m-rated ace was the joint fourth-highest scorer in the Bundesliga last season and is joint-third on that list at this juncture of the current campaign.

He also netted a hat-trick in the Champions League at Manchester City, and considering that only one Chelsea player has netted more than once so far this season in the Premier League, he could have a significant impact if he comes to Stamford Bridge. However, it remains to be seen how this one develops.
