Chelsea “will be confident” in getting Mateo Kovacic to sign new terms over the coming months.
That is according to journalist Simon Phillips, who was speaking amid recent reports that the club are aiming to agree new terms with the Croatian after the World Cup in Qatar later this month.
What’s the word?
The journalist did add one caveat, though, believing that Kovacic might be “unsure” as to whether he will remain in west London, despite reportedly being ‘comfortable‘ in the capital after marrying his partner and becoming a first-time father.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Phillips said: “Kovacic…is currently unsure on his Chelsea future.
“I expect him to enter talks with Chelsea at least, but he will have a big decision to make as he ponders a potential new challenge elsewhere. He’s enjoying it at Chelsea, though, so the club will be confident of still getting something done.”
Music to supporters’ ears
With Phillips suggesting that the Croatia international could agree a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, this must come as music to the ears of Chelsea supporters.
The £150k-per-week dynamo is often the metronome in Potter’s midfield and has been a regular feature under the former Brighton boss, averaging 60.6 accurate passes per 90 in the Premier League, whilst creating around 1.4 chances per game from the middle of the park.
The club’s reported confidence surrounding a contract extension for their most active midfielder in possession is a positive, but with the World Cup serving as an opportunity for players to put themselves in the shop window, Kovacic’s head may yet be turned if another club serves up a megabucks offer for him.
This prospective behind-the-scenes deal looks like one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks and months.
