Chelsea may seek additional recruits in the upcoming January transfer window after enduring a recent dip in form.
Sunday’s dismal defeat to Arsenal extended the Blues’ poor run to four Premier League games without a victory.
Esteemed football journalist Fabrizio Romano is backing Graham Potter to re-demonstrate the success that he showed early on in his tenure at the club, but expects changes to occur to the squad in the winter window.
Via his exclusive column with CaughtOffside, Romano said: “Chelsea will be disappointed with both the result and the performance against Arsenal yesterday, and it’s now four Premier League games without a win for Graham Potter’s side”
“I think they will try to find opportunities in January, as always; it was already a busy summer so they need to be smart now.
“They need a right-back probably, but they need time: I think the international break will be key for Graham Potter to improve the situation, he really needs time.”
Time and Money
Romano’s latest claim surrounding Chelsea is reasonable. Potter will want to put his touch on the squad and shape it to match his own philosophy by bringing in more tactically fluid assets.
Though he will need more time, and money, to achieve this.
As Romano says, a right-back would not go a miss, given Reece James’ injury woe. Though, with Ben Chilwell also out, a full-back who can play on each flank would serve as a more beneficial aid to Potter’s squad.
It has to be said, although the Chelsea boss’ bag is full of tactical twists, the squad deployed against Arsenal looked as if it had been thrown together, with big-name stars yet again finding themselves in different, unorthodox native positions.
Consistency could benefit Potter at a club like Chelsea, but to achieve that, he will need to bring in options with a primary role and system in mind, come January.
