Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea want to sign German winger

BlueCo’s transfer model has been the subject of a lot of criticism in recent weeks. Following their Club World Cup triumph in the summer, Chelsea were in a brilliant spot to take the next step. They just needed to make starter-level additions in a few positions. Instead of doing that, the club stuck to their policy of banking on potential rather than bringing in proven quality.

Joao Pedro has proven to be the only success story of the summer transfer window. Jorrel Hato and Alejandro Garnacho have shown glimpses of quality, but overall, they have not been anything extraordinary. Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens continue to struggle. Facundo Buonanotte’s loan spell was cut short in the middle of the season.

That is hardly a group of players you sign if you want to compete for the top prizes in football. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have struggled this season. In fact, they have taken a step or two backwards from last season. And after the club replaced Enzo Maresca with Liam Rosenior, it looks like they have downgraded in the managerial hot seat as well.

The fans have been demanded change to the BlueCo model for years now. The owners seem to have no such plans though. In fact, if recent reports are anything to go by, they might be ready to double down.

Chelsea’s interest in German wonderkid confirmed by Fabrizio Romano

Chelsea have signed one wonderkid after another since the BlueCo takeover. And now, it looks like German winger, Said El Mala, is on their radar.

Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed Chelsea’s interest in El Mala after reports had originally broken in the German media. The highly reliable German journalist said on YouTube:

“On Chelsea also important to say that is true what has been reported in Germany by local newspapers. Said El Mala, this talent born in 2006, 19-year-old turning 20 in August, is a player who is being followed by Chelsea. He’s on Chelsea’s short list.

“There are at least three, four clubs trying to enter the race for Said. He’s a big talent, German player, super appreciated around Europe. It’s true that also Newcastle made some calls. English clubs and not only are interested in this boy who is a huge talent, very young, but with big potential. And so several clubs involved. This is going to be, I think, a big fight for Said El Mala in the upcoming weeks with talks and discussions already, already starting.”

El Mala is a phenomenal talent but he is not what Chelsea need right now

El Mala is enjoying an excellent season right now. He has scored nine goals and provided three assists in his debut season in the Bundesliga with FC Koln.

The issue is, the 19-year-old is not the kind of player Chelsea need right now. They need someone who can come in and be an immediate starter, not another project. Just last summer, they spent around £50 million on signing Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. Are they giving up on him already?

If not, do Chelsea have the capability to give enough playing time to Garnacho, Gittens and El Mala at the same time. Do not forget, in the summer, the Blues are also set to welcome Geovany Quenda, another super talent who is expect to play on the left flank when he arrives.

This is another time when it feels like BlueCo are just trying to sign talents without having any long-term plan for them.
