Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea has been a topic of heavy discussion in recent weeks. The Argentine midfielder sparked speculation about a move away from Stamford Bridge after he did not rule out the possibility when asked about it following the 8-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of PSG in the Champions League.
Liam Rosenior was quick to come out and play down the idea. The manager said that the Argentine’s comments had been misconstrued and that he was still fully committed to Chelsea.
Yet, it does not look like that might have been the case. That is because Fernandez has now come out and doubled down on his comments.
According to The Standard, Fernandez told ESPN Argentina: “There are no talks. Right now I’m focused on Chelsea, we’ll see after the World Cup.”
Fernandez doubles down on uncertain Chelsea future
The initial belief was that Fernandez’s comments were a direct result of how badly Chelsea were doing. And there must play some part for sure. He is a World Cup winner at both club and international level. It is natural for him to want to play in the biggest competitions. But the Blues might not even make the Champions League next season. In fact, that looks like the most likely outcome after how bad they have been these past few weeks.
At the same time, reliable sources have also suggested that there have been talks regarding an extension between Chelsea and Fernandez’s camp. No agreement has been found though. And if that continues to be the case, the Argentine will consider his future options.
Chelsea’s advantage might not mean much
Chelsea might feel a sense of calm around the situation because they have a long-term contract with Fernandez. But that means little in modern football.
We have seen plenty of players engineer moves away from their clubs, despite having long-term contracts in place. If somebody no longer wants to play for the club, there is almost always going to be one outcome. And that is a transfer exit.
As for Fernandez, there is not going to be any lack of interest in his signature. Clubs like Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City and more are believed to be keeping tabs on the midfielder, in case he leaves Chelsea.
The best-case scenario would be Fernandez staying at Chelsea. He has developed into one of the club’s key players and will be vital, if BlueCo are to have any chance of succeeding in turning back the Blues into serial winners in the future.
