Enzo Fernandez has been at the centre of discussions for a few weeks now. Reports emerged from reliable sources in Argentina that there were chances he could leave Chelsea in the summer. He did not do anything to downplay that, when asked about the possibility after the game against PSG.

Liam Rosenior did try to calm down the situation. The Chelsea manager said that he had talked with Fernandez, who remains committed to the club. There was a suggestion that his comments had been misconstrued.

Unfortunately, there is not much pointing in that direction right now. On the contrary, every week, there seems to be something new that suggests Fernandez is eyeing a move away from Chelsea.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Fernandez said in an interview to Marcos Giles:

I’d like to live in Madrid, it reminds me of Buenos Aires as a city!

Fernandez’s comments will only add to the speculation about a Chelsea exit

Fernandez’s public stance on the matter in recent weeks has done nothing to convince Chelsea fans that he is not considering an exit. The Argentine midfielder joined the club back in early 2023, straight after winning the World Cup.

Since then, Chelsea have remained stuck in a cycle of mediocrity. The Club World Cup win and Champions League qualification last season, under Enzo Maresca, was a rare high for a club that has not achieved much under BlueCo despite record investment.

Unfortunately, Maresca was sacked earlier this year, months after that aforementioned Club World Cup win. And that might very well have been the last step for Fernandez. Interestingly, Real Madrid are the ones that have been linked with him for the longest time.

Chelsea’s strategy does not help them keep hold of top players

Chelsea’s transfer strategy is based on signing youngsters and developing them into key players. With this, the club are hoping to build one of the strongest teams in world football in the future, that can dominate for years to come.

On paper, that makes sense. But when it comes to execution, there is a lot to be desired. Firstly, you can never predict how a player’s career will go. Chelsea should know that, having signed so many over the past few years, who have not even come close to meeting their potential.

Also, it is not the best strategy when it comes to keeping hold of top players. They will want to win things immediately and not waste their prime years on a project that might or might not work out. But at Chelsea, it feels like the focus is always on tomorrow rather than today. It is easy to be patient with that for a while. But it has been almost four years since the BlueCo takeover, and there is not much evidence to suggest that their model will ever work out.
