Four years into the BlueCo project, Chelsea find themselves in the middle of another underwhelming season. They were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16, losing 8-2 to PSG. And they might not even make the competition next year, as they are currently out of the qualification spots. Hopes of making a run for it are fading as well as the Blues have lost their last four games on the trot as Liam Rosenior looks out of his depth in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
No matter how this season ends, there has to be a change in their transfer strategy in the summer. The club cannot continue to sign just unproven youngsters. This squad needs quality immediately. They need players who can walk into the starting XI and raise the bar from the get-go.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make such moves in the summer or not. There have been some positive reports suggesting that they are open to doing so.
On the other hand, it looks like one of their long-term targets is open to the idea of leaving his current club. That opens the window of opportunity for Chelsea to finally make their move. But they won’t be the only ones monitoring the situation.
Morgan Rogers open to Aston Villa exit with Chelsea long-term admirers
According to The Sun, Morgan Rogers would be open to leaving Aston Villa for one of the Premier League’s giants this summer. Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all long-standing admirers of the England international. Manchester United are believed to be in the mix to sign him as well.
There is said to be an understanding between Rogers and Aston Villa chiefs that this summer is probably the right time to part ways. The Birmingham-based club are under financial constraint and could command a transfer fee in the region of £100 million for the 23-year-old’s exit.
What would Rogers bring to the table?
Rogers is capable of playing as both a number 10 and on the left flank. Both are positions where Chelsea could do with some reinforcements.
Enzo Fernandez looks likely to leave in the summer after the events of the last few weeks. On the other hand, the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens have failed to impress since summer moves. So, those are both positions where Chelsea could be looking to improve in the summer. So, why not go for someone like Rogers?
Of course, any move for Rogers, especially for that kind of a transfer fee, would come with its fair share of risks as well. Is he someone who will join a club like Chelsea and become one of the faces of the team? Or is he someone who will shrink under the pressure that comes with playing for a big club? There is only one way to find out.
With the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd also in the race for Rogers, it won’t be simple to sign him though. So, let’s see where this transfer race ends up.
