It has been another poor season for Chelsea. Even if they qualify for the Champions League, which is looking very unlikely to happen, this cannot be the benchmark for the Blues. These are the minimum expectations. And the club are struggling to reach even those. That goes to show you how badly things have gone for them during the BlueCo era.
For a little while, it had looked like the project was moving in the right direction. Enzo Maresca had guided them back to the Champions League and also delivered two trophies in his first season. The Club World Cup win was a genuine high for a club that has tasted so little success in the BlueCo era.
Maresca was sacked six months later. And questions have been raised whether any manager can work within this model for any considerable length of time. Liam Rosenior has struggled badly and most fans want to see him shown the exit door as soon as possible. But Chelsea’s problems lie deeper than just the head coach.
What about others? The sporting directors? The underperforming players? Are they facing questions for their performances? Or is it business as usual? Well, journalist Matt Law had a few answers regarding that recently.
Are the Chelsea sporting directors under pressure right now?
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Law said while speaking on the London is Blue podcast:
“I did raise the fact internally with Chelsea some time ago about whether the sporting directors face judgment, given that we often hear about the planned Rosenior assessment will be in the summer 2027.
“It does work differently for the sporting directors. I don’t think they get these planned assessments because they work far closer with the ownership.
“But I have been told that anybody within Chelsea, whether it be players, the head coach, or the sporting directors, if they’re deemed to have underperformed, they will have to answer some difficult questions.”
Well, it is hard to imagine how the sporting directors won’t be deemed as underperforming after what has transpired over the past few seasons. Despite spending north of a billion pounds on the squad, this team is not good enough to even qualify for the Champions League, forget competing in it. Other Premier League giants are brushing past Chelsea will ease as well.
It has always been curious how Chelsea have chopped and changed managers so frequently, but the sporting directors have remained in place. It is about time that some questions are asked of them as well. The fans have been calling out the issue for some time now.
Are BlueCo looking to make behind the scenes changes?
It is not just on the pitch that Chelsea are failing right now. They have not had a steady shirt sponsor for years now. No other Premier League club is in that situation.
The club have been posting record losses. Of course, that is tied to their performances on the pitch and commercially. But it is very clear that things need to change.
Pretty much everybody is ‘underperforming’ at Chelsea right now. The model is not based on success. Hopefully, those “difficult questions” will be asked soon and some serious changes will be made.
