There seems to be a lot of unhappiness around Chelsea at the moment. Enzo Fernandez has openly mentioned how he would like to live in Madrid someday while being linked with a move to the Bernabeu. On the other hand, Marc Cucurella has criticised BlueCo’s transfer model, a criticism that most fans would agree with.
If Chelsea miss out on Champions League qualification, one would imagine that number will only increase. Top players won’t remain patient with this project for years.
BlueCo have already had four seasons to put a winning project together and they have failed. It is unsurprising that some are trying to engineer moves away from the club already.
On the other hand, there are those who are not getting enough playing time. One of them is Josh Acheampong. For some reason, he has not been given chances, while the Blues continue to struggle defensively.
Josh Acheampong believed to be unhappy after Chelsea blocked loan move in January
It has now emerged that Acheampong was keen on a loan exit in January. The defender wanted to head to the Championship in search of playing time. But that was blocked.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, journalist Simon Phillips wrote on his Substack regarding Acheampong’s situation:
“Another player who is unhappy at Chelsea is Josh Acheampong. He’s become very frustrated with his lack of game time and even more frustrated that he was blocked from leaving on loan in January to get more playing time. He was keen to join an unnamed Championship club in the winter window but Chelsea blocked it.”
What does the future hold for Acheampong?
Chelsea’s handling of Acheampong has been confusing to say the least. He is someone who has been viewed as someone with world-class potential. And we have gotten glimpses of that from time to time.
Yet, he has never really been given the chances that he needs to showcase what he is capable of. Initially, it was thought Enzo Maresca did not rate him highly enough. But Acheampong’s game time has decreased since Liam Rosenior became manager.
It is understandable why Acheampong might be frustrated with the situation. This is a season in which Chelsea have been terrible defensively. They could have done much worse than try and integrate the Cobham graduate into the starting XI.
Somehow, he has been overlooked for players who have never really impressed despite getting a plethora of chances. So, it should not come as a surprise if the young centre-back starts trying to engineer a move away from Chelsea in the future. The club have already lost quality Cobham talent like Marc Guehi, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall in recent times. Let’s not add to that list by parting ways with Acheampong as well.
