Last year, we saw Chelsea take advantage of Ipswich Town’s relegation and sign Liam Delap. Of course, considering how poor the English striker has been this season, that might not have been the coup that the Blues were thinking they were getting. That being said, it won’t stop them from keeping an eye on players from this campaign’s relegation contenders.
Remarkably, Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a relegation battle. They have changed managers three times this season. Thomas Frank could not see out his debut campaign. Igor Tudor had a nightmare spell. And Roberto De Zerbi has started off with a loss.
That has left Tottenham Hotspur sitting at 18th in the Premier League. They are two points behind West Ham United in 17th. Three behind Nottingham Forest in 16th. With just six more games to go, there is a real chance that Spurs would end up getting relegated.
That might have been unthinkable not too long ago. But it looks like a real possibility right now. And if that happens, Chelsea might make their move for a couple of their players.
Chelsea eyeing Tottenham duo in case Spurs get relegated
Players have rarely swapped Tottenham for Chelsea in recent times. There is a rivalry between the two London clubs, which has grown since the iconic ‘Battle of the Bridge’ game from a decade ago.
But if Tottenham do end up getting relegated this season, they will have a tough time keeping hold of their players. That might open up a window of opportunity for other clubs to swoop in and sign their best.
According to a report from Simon Phillips, Chelsea are sensing some transfer opportunities from Premier League clubs facing relegation. Lucas Bergvall and Mohammed Kudus are two Tottenham Hotspur players on their radar.
Do Kudus and Bergvall fit Chelsea’s needs right now?
Of course, relegation contenders can have some quality players. But is this what Chelsea need right now? Or do they need to go out and recruit some proven winners to turn things around for their own struggling team? I feel it might be the later.
That being said, both players could be interesting additions. Kudus is someone who has been linked with Chelsea for years, going back to his time at Ajax. Last summer, they were linked with him as well, before he swapped West Ham for Tottenham.
Kudus has not had a great season. He has scored three goals and provided six assists. He has been out injured since early January. Interestingly, Spurs have not won a game in the league since then. It is not like they were brilliant when he was available. But at least they were nowhere near a relegation battle.
Bergvall has also dealt with injury problems this season. He has returned to fitness recently but that was not enough to prevent Tottenham from losing their last two league games.
Of course, Chelsea have had their own injury problems this season. A lot of them. Thus, one has to question why they are eyeing players who are currently going through or have recently dealt with fitness issues.
