Chelsea make official announcement fans had been waiting for

Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of talk about the direction of Chelsea as a club. The results on the pitch have been nowhere near the mark. One win in their last seven Premier League games. Five losses on the trot against top flight opposition. Scoreless in their last four defeats. This is not what the Blues are about. But BlueCo’s decision-making over the past four years has left them in a position where it is becoming the new norm.

Behdad Egbahli came out recently with some interesting comments recently. Firstly, the fans have barely heard from the ownership first-hand in these past four years. So, that was a welcome change.

Egbahli did admit that they needed to improve in some things and suggested that the club would be looking to sign more ready-made players to take the project forward. It will be interesting to see what fits the definition of ‘ready-made’ in their eyes. Of course, after what we have seen over the past four years, fans are understandably sceptical.

Another thing that Egbahli mentioned was the club’s focus on keeping their best players. They are already starting to deliver on that promise. Not too long ago, Reece James signed an extension. And now, Moises Caicedo has joined him. Yes, it is now official.

Chelsea official announce contract extension for Caicedo

The news broke yesterday from several reliable sources. So, it was always just a matter of time. Even then, it is great to see the extension being made official.

Chelsea have announced on their official website that Caicedo has signed a new contract with the club until 2033. The Ecuadorian midfielder said:

‘I am so happy to have extended my contract at Chelsea.

‘I believe in this team, this club and I know we’re going in the right direction. We’ve only just begun together.

‘There is still a lot more to achieve, and I’m very hungry to keep improving every day. I want to win more trophies with Chelsea and give everything for this club and for the fans.

‘We have enjoyed some great times together already and my dream is to become a Chelsea legend, and I will work as hard as possible to make that happen.’

Caicedo joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023. Now, their habit of signing players from Brighton & Hove Albion has become a bit of an internet meme in recent years. But one cannot deny that the Blues have made some of their best signings of the BlueCo era from the Seagulls.

Caicedo has been one of the best midfielders in the world. Marc Cucurella is an elite full-back. Joao Pedro has been decent. And no matter what you think about Robert Sanchez, on his day, he is the best goalkeeper available to Liam Rosenior.

Why Caicedo’s extension is brilliant news for the Blues

There is no doubt that Caicedo is one of the few world-class talents Chelsea have got. So, getting him to sign an extension is brilliant news for the club.

Chelsea need to be building around players like Caicedo right now. The focus should be on assembling a squad that he can win with over the years to come.

Also, the fact that Caicedo has agreed to an extension does seem to suggest that he agrees with what the ownership have planned for the future. Players like him would have been told about transfer plans. So, that is a positive as well.
