Chelsea learn transfer price for highly-rated centre-back

Share

Chelsea will go into the upcoming summer transfer window with a number of objectives in mind. This is due to the fact that although the season isn’t over yet, it can be said that the Blues are headed for another disappointing finish.

While Chelsea are still alive in the FA Cup and also have the potential to book a Champions League spot, the chances of either happening remain slim, judging by the quality of football they have produced under Liam Rosenior.

Defence is one of the areas that needs urgent attention from the Blues management. Their current backline is nowhere near the quality needed at an elite club like Chelsea. As a result, we might witness a number of defensive additions being made in the near future.

It was earlier reported that Chelsea are interested in Werder Bremen’s Karim Coulibaly and have even held talks with his representatives. Now, further reports have emerged revealing the transfer fee the Blues might have to pay to secure the signature of the German youth international.

Chelsea learn transfer price to sign German centre-back from Werder Bremen

According to BILD (via Sport Witness), Chelsea’s ‘interest remains high’ in Coulibaly. Bremen are looking for a fee in the region of €45 million to let go of the centre-back. That said, it could see a dip if the Bundesliga club gets relegated.

Bremen are currently sitting in 15th position, seven points clear of the relegation zone. So, they ae in a good position to avoid the drop. However, things could change quickly in modern football and the club haven’t been consistent lately.

It is worth mentioning, though, that Coulibaly’s price could increase as well, especially with clubs like Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille also monitoring the youngster. Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz has spoken to BILD, addressing the situation. He stated:

“He has really attracted attention in recent weeks and months. There aren’t many players in Europe who get the playing time in a top five league at his age that Karim does.”

Why Chelsea should look elsewhere

Coulibaly undoubtedly is a talented young defender who could become one of the best in his position down the road. However, Chelsea need someone who would make an immediate impact, preferably someone proven.

So we think the Blues should  shift their focus to other targets. The German youngster’s numbers further prove that. According to FotMob, Coulibaly has averaged just 7.72 defensive contributions, 2.79 recoveries, 1 interception and 1.20 tackles per 90 minutes for his team this season.

While these stats are decent for a developing youngster, they would hardly be enough at Chelsea, especially at this juncture.

Honestly speaking, the club doesn’t seem to have learned from their transfer mistakes. Chelsea are still not prioritising experience, which is what is necessary right now rather than another raw talent. Anyway, ultimately it is up to the board to decide.
