Chelsea’s recent run of results mean that Manchester United are the favourites going into this weekend. But that does not mean that Michael Carrick’s side don’t have their problems going into the game. On the contrary, as things are setting up, this might be a great chance for the Blues to end their three-game goalless run in the Premier League.
Yes, for the first time since 1998, Chelsea have gone on a three-game losing run in the Premier League without scoring a goal. But when they take on Manchester United this weekend, the opposition defence will be significantly weakened.
Harry Maguire had already been handed an additional one-game ban, which will see him miss the game against Chelsea. But he is not the only centre-back that Manchester United will be without on the day.
According to The Sun, Manchester United have failed with their appeal against the red card received by Lisandro Martinez against Leeds United. The Argentine was sent off for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. His three-game ban has been upheld. So, he will miss the game against Chelsea as well as the upcoming matches against Brentford and Liverpool.
Manchester United will be without three senior centre-backs against Chelsea
Manchester United are facing a crisis at centre-back going into the game against Chelsea. Maguire and Martinez are banned. Matthijs de Ligt won’t be available either. That is not the end of their problems though.
It is believed that Leny Yoro is out for the remainder of the season as well. So, Man Utd are now without four of their five centre-backs. If there was ever a chance for the Chelsea frontline to come to life, it is this one.
Of course, considering how poor Chelsea have been, this is no guarantee that they will score on the weekend. The Blues have looked completely lost under Liam Rosenior. And while the club seem to back the manager, if things do not improve, they will have no other choice but to show him the exit door.
Liam Rosenior has big chance against Manchester United
Champions League qualification hopes are fading for Chelsea. That being said, they have a big chance against a weakened Manchester United.
If they win this game, not only will it be a confidence booster but it will also come against a direct rival in the top-five race. Of course, Chelsea’s chances are slim, but they are not over yet.
Rosenior needs to find a way to get his side winning games between now and the end of the season. Otherwise, it will be very hard for BlueCo to justify letting him continue in the role beyond this campaign.
