Chelsea came into the game against Manchester United having not scored in their previous three Premier League games. They had also lost five on the trot against top division opponents, a win over Port Vale sandwiched somewhere in between the losses. Naturally, fans were not confident about Liam Rosenior’s team’s chances.
One ray of hope was that Manchester United were without four of their five centre-backs. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.
The fact that Chelsea could not find a way past them at home just shows where this team is right now. They are now scoreless in five consecutive games when it comes to facing top flight opposition. I can confidently say that this would not have happened under Enzo Maresca.
This run has been compared to that of Graham Potter quite a bit over the last few weeks. But things had never gotten this bad back then. Chelsea should be that the season is almost over because this is relegation form. As for BlueCo, they have made a lot of bad decisions over their four years, but the one to bring in Rosenior might go down as the worst.
Chelsea fans unhappy with Liam Rosenior decision vs Man Utd
One decision from Rosenior on the night showed how bad things have gotten for Chelsea. He called upon Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah in a double substitution, with the Blues a goal down and chasing the game against Man Utd. They eventually lost 1-0.
As one Chelsea fan wrote: “We need a goal and we’re bringing on 2 cbs?”
Another said: “Rosenior is soooo out of his depth, losing the game and subs defenders with 7 minutes to go.”
What does the future hold for Rosenior after this defeat to Manchester United
It is pretty safe to say that Rosenior would have been gone by now in a different era in Chelsea’s history. Unfortunately, times have changed. But even BlueCo cannot allow things to continue things like this.
There are plenty of clubs in the Premier League who would have parted ways with Rosenior after the run he has been on. One win in eight league games. Lost six on the trot against top division teams. Goalless in the last five of them.
Briefings continue to suggest that Chelsea are ready to be patient with Rosenior. There is even talk of him continuing for another whole season before a performance review. Suggestions that pre-season will somehow fix the Blues’ mountain of problems. Nothing would surprise me anymore. Let’s just hope the right decision is made as soon as possible.
