It is hard to remember a time like this at Chelsea. Many will point towards the Graham Potter era. But to be honest, this is worse. And by some distance as well. Liam Rosenior’s team have lost four on the trot in the Premier League. They did not score in any of those matches. Overall, they have lost six consecutive games against top-level opponents and failed to find the back of the net in the last five.
It was 1998 that they last lost four consecutive league games without scoring a goal. They have not been able to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League since January 17. They have not scored since March 4.
After the loss against Manchester United, the chances of making the Champions League next season are as good as over. Mathematically, it is still possible. But practically, it is hard to see this team make it. Liverpool have a chance to go seven points clear. On the other hand, if Everton win the Merseyside derby, they will overtake Chelsea. Sunderland will do the same if they win their game in hand. Bournemouth and Brentford are now level with them after the same number of matches.
The Premier League table is tight. Realistically, Chelsea could slip down as far as 15th by the end of the season, depending on results. Forget Champions League, they are in danger of missing out on European football altogether. And unsurprisingly, some of their established players might be eyeing the exit door.
What Marc Cucurella did at full-time against Manchester United
While a lot was made about Enzo Fernandez’s comments to the media, Marc Cucurella criticised the club’s recruitment during the international break as well. The Spaniard was not handed any sort of ban. But that does not mean that he is not eyeing a possible exit in the summer.
On the contrary, Cucurella’s actions at full-time against Manchester United will raise eyebrows about his future at Chelsea.
According to Kieran Gill, Cucurella tried dashing down the tunnel after full-time, only to be told to turn around by Willie Isa. There are two years remaining on his contract this summer. He could end up as one of those leaving unless Chelsea convince him to extend.
Will Cucurella stay at Chelsea beyond this season?
Cucurella is one of the few players Chelsea have who has experience under his belt and is capable of being world-class on his day. He was phenomenal last season, both defensively and going forward.
So, it is easy to understand why the Spaniard might not be happy with the decision to sack Enzo Maresca. At the same time, he will turn 28 this summer. So, if he wants to compete for the biggest trophies in club football, the window might start to close soon.
If Chelsea want this project to be a success, they will need to find a way to keep hold of players like Cucurella. It won’t be easy to do if they lose games constantly. Right now, they can’t find a goal or a win for their life.
