Having lost four Premier League games on the trot and six against top-flight opponents, Chelsea are in historically bad form at the moment. At the moment, they can’t even score a goal, forget about winning. Of course, a lot of that has to do with their luck. They should have won against Manchester United based on the chances they had. But Liam Rosenior’s side failed to take them. On the other hand, Michael Carrick’s team made the most of the only real opportunity they got.
The history books remember the results, not the performances. Rosenior needs to finish this season on a positive note if he wants to keep his job.
Publicly, Chelsea have continued to back Rosenior. But even Behdad Egbahli did not sound completely convinced about the club’s level of backing for the manager. The BlueCo boss said:
We’ve had a tough past five, six matches, but I think we’re behind Liam. Of course, it’s a results business, but we think he can be successful long term.
It is natural for some doubt to be creeping in. Football being a ‘results business’ sounds like a potential way out, in case things continue like this. And while the club might think Rosenior has what it takes to be a long-term success, the majority of the fans do not. He has not shown anything to suggest that. On the contrary, the longer he has remained in the job, the worse Chelsea have gotten. It is somewhat similar to when Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel.
Fabrizio Romano drops good news for Chelsea
If Rosenior is to have any hope of turning things around and finishing this season strong, he will need his best players to be available. Fortunately, it looks like Estevao’s injury is not as bad as first thought.
Rosenior had mentioned how Estevao had been crying in the dressing room. It raised fears that he was seriously injured and could even end up missing the World Cup. But it does not seem like the situation is nearly as bad. Although he is set to miss a number of games for Chelsea.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Estevao is expected to be fit and ready for a World Cup call by Carlo Ancelotti in May. The hamstring injury could keep him out for 15/20 days and the hope is to be ready for a potential FA Cup final with Chelsea.
Estevao has been one of Chelsea’s most important players
Estevao has been dealing with a few injury problems lately. One can only wonder if he has been pushed a bit too hard in his debut season in Europe.
In terms of quality, he has been up there. He is one of the few Chelsea players who looks capable of making something happen and giving the opposition defenders something to think about.
It might not be a coincidence that Chelsea’s goalless run has come when Estevao has mostly been out on the sidelines. Let’s just hope that he is fit and available in the near future. At the same time, he needs to be protected. You don’t want to see him pick up too many injuries this early in his career and lose the magic that he has.
