Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea are in historically bad form. It was in 1998 that they lost four Premier League games on the trot without scoring a goal. When was the last time they had a five-game goalless losing streak in league competition? Well, that was back in 1912. Well over a century ago. Just seven years after the club was formed.
Chelsea’s next game is against Brighton & Hove Albion. And based on their current form, it won’t be any surprise if the club match that feat under Rosenior as well.
Publicly, the club continue to back Rosenior. But the tune seems to be starting to change regarding his future, and understandably so, after the results he has produced.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano said regarding Rosenior’s situation at Chelsea:
“Obviously, it’s a results business, we know that, and Chelsea can’t continue like this, that’s very clear. So they need to change as soon as possible in terms of results, in terms of impact. So Chelsea maintain their support towards the manager, they keep believing in the manager. But results are obviously needed. They have to change, they must change.
“So, Chelsea have not started active conversations with other managers at this stage. So they are maintaining their positioning in terms of manager, trusting Liam Rosenior. But obviously, this has to change in terms of results to not have any kind of media pressure in the upcoming months.”
Are BlueCo starting to lose trust in Liam Rosenior already?
Rosenior is well known to the BlueCo leadership. He spent 18 months at Strasbourg before joining Chelsea. From the outside looking in, that seems to be the primary reason he was handed the job. When you look at his resume, he certainly does not have one good enough to be considered for the Stamford Bridge post.
Yes, Rosenior did do well at Strasbourg and had a positive spell before that at Hull City. But he did not do anything exceptional.
It was not a Kjetil Knutsen situation where he was winning games against Manchester City and Atletico Madrid with a Bodo/Glimt side and taking them into the Champions League round of 16. Far from it.
Chelsea manager search if Rosenior is sacked
A lot has been made about Chelsea’s recruitment and the need to change their transfer model if they want to be successful. That being said, the club need to start reconsidering how they view managers as well.
The only manager, proven at the highest level, they have brought in so far is Mauricio Pochettino. Even he was not a winner at Tottenham Hotspur and underdelivered at PSG. And just when it looked like things were clicking, BlueCo decided to part ways with him.
Modern football has become increasingly manager-centric and tactics-oriented. Chelsea cannot afford to have someone in the hot seat who is not capable of competing with the very best. Their next appointment needs to be a proven winner, not another project coach who is more suited to managing mid-table teams.
