Another game, another loss for Chelsea. The 3-0 defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion made it five in a row without scoring a single goal. That is just in the league though. When you consider all competitions, the Blues have suffered seven losses on the trot when facing top-flight opponents and are scoreless in the previous six of them.
This is very much the lowest point of the BlueCo era. If they are still planning to give Liam Rosenior the next pre-season, they should seriously reconsider it.
A pre-season is not some magical period of time that will transform a team that can’t score a goal to save itself into contenders. It simply won’t happen. On the contrary, what it would do is put the next campaign at risk as well. The best path forward is to start afresh, hopefully with a proven manager instead of going for another experimental choice.
Also, after Rosenior’s comments following the loss to Brighton, there seems to be a clear disconnect between the players and the manager. A sacking is inevitable. Now, it is just about when. But which from the current squad will remain at the club beyond this campaign?
What Enzo Fernandez did at full-time after losing to Brighton
One player whose Chelsea future is in doubt is Enzo Fernandez. He was even handed a two-game suspension recently for comments he made.
It is not hard to see why someone like Fernandez might be considering an exit though. There won’t be any Champions League football this season. And this project seems headed nowhere, to be honest. It is natural for a professional footballer to consider his options. He surely has aspirations of lifting major trophies, which seems unlikely to happen at Chelsea.
After the loss to Brighton, Fernandez went to the away fans and just stood there. As Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones reported:
“Not sure what Enzo Fernandez is playing at, heading over to the away end and just standing there, staring into the abyss. He is the last one to leave the pitch. Was that some kind of statement?”
What message was Fernandez trying to send to Chelsea fans?
It is hard to make sense of Fernandez’s actions after the loss to Brighton. Was he standing with the away fans to take accountability for the loss? That is possible. Or was this some kind of ‘what I am supposed to do’ message?
Anyways, everything is just speculation at this point. Only Fernandez knows what he was doing at full-time. And to be frank, Chelsea have bigger things to worry about at the moment.
Do they continue with Rosenior after that Brighton game? It does look like he has lost the dressing room already. Bringing in an interim has to be considered to salvage something from this campaign.
