Liam Rosenior has been dismissed by Chelsea after a string of poor results. The pressure had already been building on him, and this outcome seemed inevitable. The 3-0 loss against Brighton was the final straw that led to the Englishman’s sacking.
The Blues have now sacked two managers in a period of less than four months. Calum McFarlane has been handed the interim charge for now, but he is expected to be replaced by someone with more experience in the near future.
A number of candidates have already been linked with the Chelsea job, including Jose Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino, Cesc Fabregas, Andoni Iraola, among others.
In the meantime, reports have emerged suggesting that a current Premier League tactician has also joined that list. According to BBC, Fulham boss Marco Silva is set to be a candidate for the position this summer.
Who is Marco Silva?
Silva has been the manager at Fulham since 2021. The Portuguese tactician has successfully kept the club out of the relegation zone so far this season. For so many years before the Portuguese manager’s appointment, they had just yo-yoed between the Premier League and Championship. Those days now seem to be gone, largely thanks to him. In fact, there is a decent chance they will finish this season above Chelsea.
Needless to say, the Fulham boss has gathered years of Premier League experience, something that Rosenior clearly lacked.
Silva’s contract expires in the summer. Moreover, the Portuguese manager is represented by Jorge Mendes, who shares a good relationship with the Blues’ owners. That could further help in securing the services of the tactician if the club decides to pursue him in the future.
Could Marco Silva handle the pressure at Chelsea
Chelsea are hardly a club where a manager’s job is safe and stable. Additionally, the Blues will be eager for an immediate impact, which will be tough for Silva, or anybody else, to achieve.
The owners will have to take their next steps very carefully. The club currently appears to be lacking clear direction. The next managerial appointment will have to be someone who is trusted and given time to implement their tactical vision on the squad. He will also need backing in the transfer market.
It remains to be seen if Silva fits that criteria or if the ownership goes with someone else. For now, though, McFarlane, who is in charge, will have to steady the Chelsea ship and improve the situation as the board continues their search for a new manager.
