It is very clear that Chelsea made an error parting ways with Enzo Maresca in the middle of the season. Appointing Liam Rosenior as his replacement proved to be an even bigger one. The Englishman guided the Blues to their worst run of form since 1912 before being sacked yesterday.
Of course, it is never good to see a manager getting sacked. That being said, it had become unavoidable after how bad Chelsea had been recently, losing five games on the trot in the Premier League and seven when facing top-level opposition across all competitions.
Rosenior is gone and Chelsea need to find their next manager. Of course, there is a lot of speculation about the situation. Andoni Iraola is the only name to be linked consistently with the job over the past 24 hours or so. But expected more names to crop up over the coming days and weeks.
Some have suggested the idea of bringing back Enzo Maresca, who is still available since being sacked. But is a return to Chelsea something that the Italian manager would consider?
Fabrizio Romano confirms Enzo Maresca’s stance on Chelsea return after Liam Rosenior sacking
Maresca is proven at Chelsea. And most importantly, he has shown that he can get something out of this squad. Also, his sacking feels unfair. He wanted more experience to be brought in, and there is a recognition now that that is what the club need to do this summer.
Then, does that open up the door for a return to Chelsea for Maresca? Well, does not seem to be the case. Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel about the situation:
Enzo Maresca. Some of you asking me, is there a chance maybe Chelsea return with Enzo Maresca who is available again on the market? No. Between Chelsea and Maresca, it’s completely over. And Maresca remains a strong candidate to become the next Manchester City manager in summer 2026 or 2027 based on when Pep Guardiola decides to go. But at the moment, no Chelsea-Maresca reunion.”
No Enzo Maresca return is going to happen
So, that is another name out of the running for the Chelsea job. Julian Nagelsmann is another one who has already dropped out, hours after Rosenior’s sacking was confirmed.
To be honest, Chelsea will have a tough time attracting a top manager this summer, even if they want to. After what we have seen over the past four years under BlueCo, there is bound to be a reluctance.
Firstly, they need to change their transfer policy. Secondly, they need to allow the manager to have more say rather than just being someone who is just there to coach the players. If the club do those things, it might become a lot easier than it feels at the moment.
