Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea remains up in the air, although the focus of the media might have turned towards the managerial search after Liam Rosenior’s sacking. The Argentine midfielder has never really committed to staying at the club when asked about it. In fact, he went as far as to mention Madrid as a place he would like to stay in someday. Interesting timing as he continues to be linked with a move to the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid are believed to have had Fernandez on their radar since his days at Benfica. That being said, they are not the only ones interested. Manchester City are said to be keeping an eye on the Chelsea midfielder as well.
Fernandez is criticised at times by Chelsea fans, but the level of clubs interested in him goes to show how highly he is regarded in footballing circles. The Blues need to make sure that they are able to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
According to the Daily Mail (via The Chelsea Chronicle), the Blues will sit down with Fernandez and reopen contract discussions once the season comes to an end. It is thought that the Argentine midfielder wants a deal similar to the ones Moises Caicedo and Reece James recently signed.
Enzo Fernandez deserves similar contract to Moises Caicedo and Reece James
If Fernandez wants a deal similar to Caicedo and James, then that should not be a problem. The midfielder is a regular starter for the Blues as well and one of their best performers. Without his goals from the middle of the park, Chelsea could be in a much worse position right now.
Fernandez is one of the dressing room leaders as well. Reports after the sacking of Rosenior suggested that many players were not happy with the decision to ban the Argentine for two games, especially the one against Manchester City.
So, to be honest, he deserves a contract similar to Caicedo and James. Let’s hope that an agreement can be found soon.
Fernandez would want to see Chelsea show ambition
Just a new contract might not be enough to keep Fernandez happy though. He would want to see his sporting ambitions be met as well.
Fernandez is a World Cup winner. And if he chooses to leave, clubs like Manchester City and Real Madrid would be interested in his services. So, it is understandable why he would want Chelsea to be competitive with such teams. That is what the club’s supporters want as well. So, no criticism should go his way for that.
A lot might depend on the kind of players that Chelsea sign this summer. And of course, the manager they end up appointing.
