Chelsea have tried to fill the absence of Eden Hazard for years now, without any success. Last summer, they spent around €100 million strengthening on the left flank. Alejandro Garnacho was brought in after falling out of favour at Manchester United. Jamie Gittens was signed from Borussia Dortmund, even though he had spent the second half of the 24/25 season out of the starting XI.
Chelsea backed their scouting over recent performances in both cases. And in both instances, they failed. Garnacho has failed to make the impact that was expected of him. On the other hand, Gittens has been a non-entity, struggling with both form and fitness throughout the season.
So, it would not be a surprise if Chelsea try their luck again this summer. And this time around, they might be looking at a more proven option. Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United has been linked with the Blues.
Chelsea were believed to have Gordon on their radar back in the summer of 2022 as well. Since then, he has grown as a player. This season, he scored 10 goals in the Champions League. His league form has not been as good. But that has not stopped the Blues from monitoring him.
Fabrizio Romano drops update on Anthony Gordon
There is mixed news for Chelsea when it comes to Gordon. The good news is, a Newcastle United is strarting to look increasingly likely. The bad news is, Bayern Munich seem to be leading the race to sign him.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Gordon has serious chances of leaving Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. Bayern Munich are already working on the deal with some initial explorative contacts, and he is in the top three on their shortlist for a new winger. Premier League clubs could join the race as well.
There are many who still doubt whether Gordon would be the right fit for this team. But Bayern Munich’s interest in him goes to show how highly he is regarded.
Should Chelsea sign Gordon this summer?
Considering the level of interest in Gordon, it looks like it could take a significant fee to sign him. There is a risky of overpaying as a result of it.
If possible, Chelsea should move their sights elsewhere. Let’s not forget, Gordon has only managed six goals in the league this season.
At the same time, whoever Chelsea do sign, should be a proven player. It should not be another project signing that might or might not work out.
