Chelsea open contract talks with player they wanted to let go last season

Share

Chelsea will need to bring in some genuine quality this summer if they want to start competing with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal anytime soon. But the focus cannot completely shift towards making new signings. It is equally important to make sure that the Blues’ best players remain at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have already done a good job when it comes to agreeing new terms with Reece James and Moises Caicedo, two of the club’s best players. They are also expected to sit down with Enzo Fernandez over an extension when the season comes to an end.

Fernandez is not the only one whose extension the club are targeting right now. They seem to have already moved further forward with a Cobham graduate.

Chelsea open talks with defender who was out on loan last season

According to Nicolo Schira, Chelsea have opened talks to try to extend Trevoh Chalobah’s contract. His current deal is believed to run until the summer of 2028.

Not too long ago, BlueCo did not see a future for Chalobah at Chelsea. In fact, he was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace just last season.

There is no doubt that Chalobah has managed to establish himself as a starter for Chelsea and has arguably been the best centre-back for the Blues in the absence of Levi Colwill. So, an extension has been well earned. That being said, he remains a player who divides the opinion of the supporters.

Chalobah has divided the opinion of the fanbase

Not everybody would be delighted to see Chelsea handing Chalobah a long-term extension though. There is a large section of the fanbase who still believe that the club cannot compete with the best with the Englishman starting for the Blues.

To be fair, that might be not be that far-fetched. While Chalobah has been a steady performer for the Blues, he does not seem like someone who can take his game up to the next level. He does not appear to have the potential to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Chalobah should be kept around as a squad player at the very least though. He is a popular member of the squad, has come up through Cobham and by now has a little bit of experience under his belt too. But at the end of the day, Chelsea do need to strengthen their centre-back ranks. That remains the case whether an extension is agreed with the Englishman or not.
