It would be safe to say that Chelsea have been linked with a long list of players ahead of the summer transfer window. But as we gradually head towards the end of the campaign, one would hope that it narrows down quickly and concrete moves start getting made.
Chelsea might have invested around €100 million on the left flank last summer, bringing in Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens, but that remains an area of weakness. The former has failed to make an impression. At least one that was expected of someone considered among the best talents in world football while coming through the ranks at Manchester United. The latter has been injured for the majority of the campaign, and when he has played, we have failed to see what convinced the Blues to make that kind of an investment on signing him.
Anyways, do not be surprised if Chelsea try to sign another left winger in the summer. And it looks like they are already starting to take the initial steps in that regard.
According to Simon Phillips (via TEAMtalk), Chelsea have held a ‘meeting’ with the representatives of Anthony Gordon over a summer move.
Chelsea hold meeting with Anthony Gordon’s agents
Gordon is likely to change clubs this summer. Chelsea have been interested in him going back to 2022, when Thomas Tuchel was the manager of the Blues.
Back then, many had raised their eyebrows at the idea of signing Gordon. But over the next four years, he has proven himself to be one of the best in the Premier League. He has scored 10 goals in the Champions League this season. Now, Chelsea will probably have to pay significantly more to sign him.
A transfer fee in the region of £80 million has been suggested. Many Chelsea fans would like to see a more proven name being brought in for those kinds of figures. Now, it remains to be seen if a move is made or not.
Would Gordon be the right signing?
While Gordon might not be the biggest name in the game, that does not mean that he could be a solid signing. Just look at some of the signings Chelsea passed on in the past.
Michael Olise was not brought in and he is playing at a Ballon d’Or level right now. Rayan Cherki has driven Manchester City over the last few months.
So, Chelsea have gotten a lot of their scouting right. But perhaps, they have just not signed a lot of the right players for one reason or another. Without Champions League football, they will have a tough time this summer as well. Could Gordon turn out to be another transfer regret if he goes to Bayern Munich?
