Earlier today, we covered reports that linked Wesley Fofana with a move to Barcelona. They also suggested that Chelsea would be open to the idea, given that they receive a suitable offer, believed to be in the region of €30 million excluding bonuses. Of course, that would be quite the loss for a player they shelled out around £70 million to sign.
Unfortunately, considering Fofana’s injury history, it is hard to imagine that Chelsea would receive an offer anywhere near what they paid to sign him.
Fofana has slipped down the pecking order at Chelsea recently, despite largely being a starter when fit and available for the majority of his time at the club. Could that lead to the Frenchman seeking a move away in the summer?
Does Wesley Fofana want to leave Chelsea this summer?
According to the Daily Mail, Fofana has no intention of leaving Chelsea. He is known to earn more than £200,000 a week at Stamford Bridge.
It feels unlikely that many teams would be willing to match, or even come close to, that figure if Fofana were to leave Chelsea. Thus, it is understandable for him not to actively seek a move away unless it becomes unavoidable. His current contract with the club is believed to run until the summer of 2029.
It has also been reported that many Chelsea players will face a 20 per cent pay cut for failing to qualify for the Champions League. But it is unclear whether that applies to Fofana. He had arrived earlier than most of the squad and was one of the first signings of the BlueCo era.
Chelsea do need a centre-back and Fofana’s exit could facilitate that
It is unfortunate how things have turned out for Fofana. He is one of the players who does seem to play with his heart on his sleeve. And if he had managed to avoid injuries, perhaps he would have met his potential and become one of the best in the Premier League. It was not to be.
Chelsea will need to sign a centre-back this summer. And they have been linked with quite a few. The club could very well try to find Fofana a new home. That could help raise funds for the other signing.
One of the players Chelsea have been most recently linked with is Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven. But he is not the only one.
Murillo of Nottingham Forest and Jan Paul van Hecke of Brighton are believed to be targets as well. So, let’s wait and watch how things play out.
