Liverpool might not be in the greatest form, but even then, going away to Anfield and getting a result is not an easy task. Chelsea managed to come back with a 1-1 draw and some might even be disappointed that they did not win. They most certainly had their chances to do so.
Enzo Fernandez and Joao Pedro missed decent opportunities. Cole Palmer had even found the back of the net for Chelsea’s second, only for it to be ruled out offside because of Marc Cucurella.
Speaking of Cucurella, he is someone who caused Liverpool a lot of problems on the day. And his performance managed to catch the eye of Wayne Rooney.
Wayne Rooney singles out Marc Cucurella for performance vs Liverpool
According to Metro, Rooney said while speaking on BBC Sport:
‘I thought Liverpool actually started quite well, got the goal, and then from there Chelsea were the better team.
‘They caused Liverpool big problems, especially Marc Cucurella running behind.’
Liverpool got the early lead but then Chelsea took control of things, something that many might not have expected after seeing the Blues lose six times on the trot in the Premier League.
Cucurella was one of the players who caused Liverpool a lot of issues. And if he had just held one of his runs better, Chelsea could have come out of Anfield with all three points.
The overall performance should be viewed as a positive though. Especially ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City next weekend. That remains the Blues’ only chance at silverware this season. The fact that they have that opportunity, after how bad they have been lately, is a minor miracle in itself. Now, they need to make the most of it. And drawing away at Anfield should give them a bit of confidence.
Cucurella remains an important part of this Chelsea team, but for how long?
Cucurella has been one of Chelsea’s best players going back to Mauricio Pochettino’s run as manager of the club. But the Spaniard’s future at Stamford Bridge is under some doubt.
Cucurella is one of the players who has openly criticised the club’s transfer policy. He is in his prime and will be looking to compete for major trophies. Does he think he can do that at Chelsea? It remains to be seen if he decides to push for a move in the summer.
Barcelona are believed to hold an interest in Cucurella. But considering their financial situation, and the kind of transfer fee Chelsea are expected to ask for, the Spanish champions might have a difficult time pulling it off.
