‘I can guarantee’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms good news for Chelsea in Xabi Alonso race

Share

Looking over social media, it is very easy to see that a large section of the Chelsea fanbase would like to see Xabi Alonso get the managerial job this summer. He is one of the only names on the shortlist with a history of winning at the top level and managing top clubs. With all due respect to Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola, they have not done that.

Then there is the playing career Alonso had. One of the best midfielders of his generation who was a regular starter for Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, as well as part of a World Cup-winning Spanish team. Someone of his stature would get the respect of the dressing room from day one, something that Liam Rosenior was not able to do.

Then again, signing Alonso won’t be the easiest task. Other clubs are expected to be interested in him as well. The Spaniard is without a club at the moment after being sacked by Real Madrid earlier this season.

He has been constantly linked with Liverpool lately as well. A section of their fanbase seems to have given up on Arne Slot, even though he won them the Premier League just last season. But there is some good news for Chelsea in this regard.

Fabrizio Romano provides good news for Chelsea in race to sign Xabi Alonso ahead of Liverpool

Obviously, Alonso has a history with Liverpool, having represented them for half a decade and won the Champions League there. Also, the Reds simply are in a better place than Chelsea right now as a football club.

If it came down to Chelsea and Liverpool, Alonso is very likely to pick the latter. But it looks like they are not even interested at this moment. Fabrizio Romano said while speaking on his YouTube channel:

There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Xabi Alonso, also coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year, 2026, never made any direct approach with Xabi Alonso or with his agents. Not at all, never happened this year. It happened two years ago when they were considering a manager, then Xabi Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and they decided to go for Arne Slot. But now, no approach made for Xabi Alonso.

Can BlueCo convince Alonso?

This might be the biggest question right now. Are BlueCo capable of convincing Alonso that Chelsea is the right team for him?

If they are, then it is likely that Chelsea will end up with him in the dugout. Talks are believed to have been going on for a little while. If there was no level of interest on the part of Alonso, he could have simply just walked away. He has not. At least that is what the reports suggest.

Obviously, he would want a lot more say in football matters than Chelsea’s recent managers have been given. And to be honest, after how things have played out under BlueCo, it is about time that the club restructure things.
