Enzo Fernandez has faced plenty of criticism during his time at Chelsea. Some of it has been deserved, the rest not so much. But there is no way to claim that the Argentine is not an integral part of this team. Since Liam Rosenior was sacked and Calum McFarlane became interim boss, the Blues have picked up two positive results.
One was a 1-0 win over Leeds United to book their place in the FA Cup final. Another was a 1-1 draw against Liverpool away at Anfield.
On both occasions, it was Fernandez who found the back of the net. He is also captaining the team again, despite having been handed a two-game suspension for comments he made not too long ago.
Of course, that was the period of time when it looked like Fernandez and his camp might have been pushing for a move to Real Madrid. Curiously, that noise has faded way over the past few weeks. Perhaps it has become clear that Los Blancos won’t be making a move of that magnitude for the Argentine. Or maybe it has just been swept under the carpet and the situation will be assessed once the season is over.
Enzo Fernandez set to be handed contract until 2033 or 2034 according to report
One of the reasons behind Fernandez’s unhappiness was believed to be the want of a contract extension at Chelsea. And now, it looks like he could be set to receive it.
According to Nicolo Schira, Chelsea are ready to offer to Fernandez the contract extension until 2033 or 2034.
It remains to be seen if that is accepted by Fernandez and his camp or not. But it looks like a positive move. It might also be another reason why all the talk about him potentially leaving this summer has suddenly gone away. Probably, this has been worked on in the background all this time.
Chelsea cannot afford to let Fernandez leave
Contrary to popular belief, I do not think that BlueCo intend to build a team where they will let go of their best players once they develop. You do not spend north of a billion pounds to create that model.
The ultimate aim is winning, even though they have not done a great job at it so far. But they will know that if they are to have any hope of doing so in the future, they will need Fernandez.
Fernandez’s strike against Liverpool, straight from a free-kick, was his 20th goal contribution of this season. It might be almost impossible for the club to replace that, especially with someone who is as good as him on the ball as well and not just a box-crasher.
