There are all sorts of rumours doing the rounds about the Xabi Alonso situation right now. Some claim that he has held positive talks with Chelsea and is interested in the role. Others say that he is on the shortlist but nothing is advanced. And then there are even suggestions that the club would prefer for things to remain quiet, just in case they miss out on the Spaniard.
The only thing that seems certain is that there is something going on in the background between Chelsea and Alonso. The extent of that is unclear and seems to change from one journalist’s point of view to another.
When it comes to the fans, the majority would prefer to see Alonso get the job. He is quite simply the best option available at the moment, out of the ones that seem realistic.
What Alonso’s reps have told Liverpool
Ultimately, it might come down to being able to convince Alonso that Chelsea is the right place for him. After how things have turned for some of the club’s previous managers, that might be a tough task.
It has been widely suggested that Alonso would want more of a say on football matters. Chelsea might be willing to hand him that as well. But would that make them the Spaniard’s preferred option?
According to Indykaila News, Alonso’s reps have informed Liverpool that Chelsea are making enquiries for their client. They have let the Reds know that they are the Spaniard’s first choice.
Why Alonso’s reported interest in Liverpool job is bad news for Chelsea
If that report is accurate, then it is bad news for Chelsea. Obviously, Alonso used to play for Liverpool and that will play a factor. On top of that, the Reds have also shown that they are capable of building something sustainable, which the Blues have not since BlueCo’s takeover.
Most reliable sources have suggested though that Liverpool are not looking to make a managerial change this summer. They want to stick with Arne Slot.
That being said, it does not take long for things to change in football. Slot seems to have lost the trust of a large section of the Liverpool fanbase already, despite winning the Premier League just last season. And if he ends up putting up a couple of bad results, perhaps the Reds might start reconsidering the situation, especially with Alonso available and reportedly preferring a move back to Anfield over Stamford Bridge.
