There is no secret that Chelsea fans would like to see Xabi Alonso get the job as the next manager of the club. Out of the options that have been linked with the job, he feels like the most reliable one. The Spaniard was a top-level player himself. That means that it could help him command the dressing room from day one.
Then there is a proven record of playing winning football with youngsters. He won an invincible Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. What makes that even more impressive is that when he had taken over at the club, they were 17th and a relegation contender.
Turning around a club like that within such a small period of time cannot happen by accident. Alonso can get the job done and guide his teams to trophies.
Of course, many might point towards his failed stint at Real Madrid. But look towards Santiago Bernabeu now and things have gotten only worse since Alonso left.
Xabi Alonso has also been linked with the Liverpool job
Alonso has been linked heavily with Chelsea over the past couple of days. In fact, it has been reported that talks are already underway with his camp.
Amid all this, one persistent rumour that refuses to go away is the one involving Alonso and Liverpool. There have been suggestions that he prefers a move to Anfield and might be delaying a return to football because of it. How accurate is that?
Well, according to a report from Jacob Steinberg in The Guardian, there is optimism at Chelsea over how early talks with Alonso’s camp have gone. Also, suggestions that he is waiting to see if the Liverpool roles open have also been downplayed.
Alonso is not waiting for Liverpool which makes things easier for Chelsea
That update will be music to the ears of Chelsea fans. Of course, nothing has been agreed with the Blues yet. But the lesser competition, the easier it will be for them.
As for Liverpool, it has been consistently maintained that they want to stick with Arne Slot. The Dutchman has won the Premier League with them, so the reluctance to part ways is understandable.
Now, it is up to BlueCo to convince Alonso that Chelsea is the right place for him. He will need to be given more say over football matters and to be honest, that might be for the best. After how things have played out at the club over the last four seasons, somebody needs to come in with fresh and better ideas.
