With how little success Chelsea have had under BlueCo over the past four seasons, many fans have been left worried about how much pull the club still have when it comes to attracting players. But the Blues have been an institution in the game for decades now. A little down period is not going to significantly affect how they are viewed, especially if competitive wages are on offer.
Chelsea are expected to be busy in the upcoming summer transfer window. And if Yan Diomande’s comments are any indicator, the club should not have much problem attracting the players they are interested in.
In fact, Diomande is one of the players they have been linked with in recent times. The club could do with another winger after Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens, last summer’s signings, have failed to make an impact.
It sounds like Diomande might be open to the idea if the opportunity presented itself. He said:
Imagine people say you go to Chelsea or Real Madrid to do this job…you’re going to be happy and motivated to do more.
RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande namedrops Chelsea
Diomande has been one of the standout players in the Bundesliga this season. In his debut campaign in the German top flight, he has scored 13 goals and provided 9 assists in 35 games across the league and the cup.
That is excellent output for any winger. But then take into account that he is still just 19 years of age and it looks even more impressive.
It is expected to take a transfer fee in the region of €75 million, if not more, to sign Diomande this summer. But would he be the right signing for Chelsea at this point of time?
Chelsea’s needs might be different this summer
Going into the summer transfer window, a lot of the talk has been about Chelsea signing ‘ready-made’ players. Now, how would you define that? Well, it would be those who have played in the Premier League or equivalent levels. Ideally, they also should have played in Europe.
Would you say that Diomande falls under that category? Well, he has played both in the Bundesliga and La Liga. He has also represented Ivory Coast at the national team level and scored thrice for them.
But it might be a stretch to consider him a ‘ready-made’ player already. Under normal circumstances, Chelsea fans would be delighted if the club signed someone like Diomande. But after having seen BlueCo bring in one wonderkid after another over the past four seasons, there is a need for change to that strategy. Experience and proven quality have to be the focus this summer.
