Chelsea open talks to sign English player as a free agent

Chelsea have a lot of work to do this summer in order to make sure Xabi Alonso has a squad capable of competing. Most feel that it involves signing proven and experienced players. Of course, that would mean spending big on transfer fees and on wages, something that the Blues have been reluctant to do lately. So, let’s just wait and watch how this plays out.

During the BlueCo era, the club have mostly signed highly-rated youngsters from all around the globe. And while there has been all this talk about signing proven players, they continue to be linked with youngsters.

The latest player to be linked with Chelsea is an 18-year-old currently playing for Wigan Athletic. He is set to be available as a free agent in this window. Interestingly, some other European giants are interested as well.

According to Pete O’Rourke, Manchester City, Chelsea and AC Milan are in talks to sign Harrison Bettoni. The attacking midfielder is available as a free agent.

Who is Harrison Bettoni?

Wigan will be due a training compensation from whoever he ends up joining this summer. But his contract does run out, which makes this an inexpensive operation.

Bettoni has played a decent amount of football for Wigan already despite being just 18 years of age. He has made 27 appearances and scored four goals.

That has been enough to catch the eye of three of the biggest teams in European football. Now, it remains to be seen where he will end up.

Would Bettoni be a good signing for Chelsea?

Obviously, he is not the type of player who can be expected to come in and solve Chelsea’s problems. It is a lot more likely that he will spend some time at Cobham or head out on loan. The same can be said for the other two clubs he is being linked with as well.

Bettoni is 18 years of age. He is versatile though. He can play as the number 10 or as the centre-forward, depending on the situation.

So far, the highest level of football he has played is the League One. So, there is going to be a jump in quality, wherever he goes. It will be interesting to see if he can deal with that. There are many who are just naturally capable of doing that. Others fail. Which category does he belong to? We shall find out soon.

matchday.
