Chelsea might undergo a transformation this summer when it comes to their options on the wings. The club did try to strengthen their flanks last year when they signed Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United and Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. It is believed that they spent north of £90 million combined on the two additions.
It would be safe to say that they have not met expectations. Garnacho is expected to leave already. And while Gittens might be shown more patience, if the right offer comes in, he might be shown the exit door as well.
Then there is Pedro Neto, another player Chelsea seem open to seeing leave for the right transfer fee. That would mean that a good portion of the Blues’ options on the flanks could be on their way out. They would need to bring in replacements.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have now also entered the race for Zadok Yohanna. Newcastle United’s proposal is currently understood to be the highest. Brighton, however, are still hoping to secure the player’s commitment. Verbal agreement is 100% done.
Who is Zadok Yohanna, the Nigerian winger wanted by Chelsea?
Yohanna currently plays for AIK. He is still just 18 years of age but has already been putting up some staggering numbers for his team.
Yohanna has scored five goals and provided four assists in 12 appearances this season. He has 877 minutes in total. So, he is averaging a goal contribution every 97 minutes.
Those are brilliant numbers for a winger who is still 18 years old and has not played much top-level football. One would only expect him to get better from here.
So, it is not hard to understand why Chelsea want him. That has been their entire transfer strategy for four years now. Will they be able to sign him? Or will he end up elsewhere in search of playing opportunities and growth?
Would Yohanna be a good signing?
It all depends on what you are hoping for, to be honest. I do not think that Yohanna is someone who can come in and immediately start delivering for a club like Chelsea.
Only a select few players in his age bracket can do that. And we have not seen Yohanna play at a level that would convince us that he falls in that category.
Obviously, he could surprise everybody. But the chances of that happening are low to nil. It is much more likely that he would be sent out on loan to develop before making a judgment on whether he is ready for Chelsea or not.
Chelsea are already expected to have two youngsters vying for wing spots next season in Estevao and Geovany Quenda. I cannot see them adding Yohanna to the mix, even if they successful in signing him.
