When you look at this Chelsea team from top to bottom, there are a lot of areas which could do with reinforcements. They were barely good enough to finish 10th in the Premier League and without any silverware. Those are not the standards that the fans have at Stamford Bridge. So, improvement is necessary.
Xabi Alonso’s arrival could help in that. But one needs to recognise that the Spaniard is not going to magically solve everything. He will need help from the management to build him a squad that is actually capable of competing at the top level.
One player who has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks is Dusan Vlahovic. And it looks like the club are already taking the first steps in signing him.
According to Sebastien Vidal, Chelsea has taken action in the Vlahovic race. The Blues have made contact with the entourage of the Serbian striker, whose future at Juventus seems increasingly uncertain. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also closely monitoring the situation.
Chelsea taking first steps in race to bring in Dusan Vlahovic
That just goes to show that Chelsea are ahead of the race than others when it comes to Vlahovic. Of course, things can change. And they often do in football. But at the end of the day, the Blues are taking action.
Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Vlahovic. It is widely expected that he will leave Juventus this summer.
His current contract is running out and an agreement has not been found yet. It remains to be seen if that changes. One final meeting is believed to be set between both camps.
If Juventus fail to convince him this time as well, then Vlahovic will become a free agent. And rarely does a chance come around to sign a player of his quality without a transfer fee.
Vlahovic has not met his potential at Juventus
Obviously, Vlahovic has been a regular part of Juventus’ team since joining them. But that does not mean that he has met expectations at the club.
Once upon a time, he was considered to be in the same bracket as Erling Haaland when it came to young strikers in world football. But it would be safe to say that he has fallen quite some distance behind in that competition.
In fact, Christian Viera had once hailed Vlahovic as “the best natural striker in Europe with Haaland”. On the other hand, a certain Gianluigi Buffon had called him the “the best young player in the world” alongside Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Well, the potential that he showed at Fiorentina did not fully materialise at Juventus. But he is still 26 years of age and has no lack of interest in his signature. So, perhaps a change of scenery would serve him well. Does a move to Chelsea lie in his future?
