It will be very interesting to see how Chelsea approach this summer transfer window. It has been mentioned that Xabi Alonso is going to have a lot of say, having been appointed as manager rather than head coach. But there are some decisions that might be out of his hands already. For instance, some might have already decided that the time has come for them to leave and not even give the Spaniard a try.
Chelsea have failed to meet expectations for four years now. Fans have been left frustrated by one of the most unsuccessful periods in recent memory. One would imagine it is the same for the players as well.
The hope is that Alonso’s arrival will turn things around. But it looks like one of the players he wants to keep around could be ready to part ways already.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Marc Cucurella has already informed Chelsea of his intention not to continue there. He considers his time at Stamford Bridge to be completely over. Both parties understand that the best solution is a move during this summer transfer window, provided a suitable offer arrives.
Xabi Alonso reportedly wants Marc Cucurella to stay
When Alonso arrived, one of the first reports that emerged was that he wanted Cucurella to stay. But it looks like the Spaniard might be intent on an exit.
It has been claimed that he already has offers. But he seems to be waiting for Barcelona to make a move this summer.
The transfer fee is expected to be around the €50 million mark, if not more. Now, it remains to be seen if Barca do make a move or not.
It is worth pointing out that Cucurella came through the La Masia system but was never able to establish himself there. So, it is easy to understand why a return is attractive to him.
Who could replace Cucurella at Chelsea?
If Cucurella does indeed end up leaving this summer, Chelsea will need to find a replacement for him. He is a regular starter after all.
But signing one won’t be easy. A lot of people are confident that Jorrel Hato could be good enough to take his spot in the team.
Hato did impress with his performances in the second half of last season. But I do not believe that he is ready to be a starter yet.
Chelsea have been linked with Lewis Hall as well. And if you ask me, that is the best signing that they can make at this point in time. He is Premier League-proven, young and arguably the best in England right now, possibly even an upgrade on Cucurella.
