‘Secretly thinking’ – Fabrizio Romano drops Chelsea transfer update

Chelsea have a lot of work to do in this summer transfer window. It is believed that there are at least two starting-level players they want to bring in. And that is before any potential departures take place, which will leave gaps in the squad.

So, it is going to be very important for Chelsea to make sure that they hold on to their best players. But unfortunately, a lot of them might be eyeing moves away already.

One such player is none other than Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder has refused to rule out an exit when asked about it. And he also mentioned in an interview that he wanted to live in Madrid someday.

Curiously, that admission came amid rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid. So, is that on the cards? Or are Los Blancos looking at other players instead? We finally have an update on the entire situation from Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio Romano drops an update on Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid

While speaking on his YouTube channel regarding Fernandez’s links with Real Madrid, Romano said:

I am sure that Enzo Fernandez is still secretly thinking about Real Madrid as a possibility for his future. This is not a secret. We know he experienced difficult weeks around March, April when he did that quote in a podcast saying, ‘I would like to live in Madrid one day.’

Then Chelsea were very upset and so out of the squad for two, three games. Then back in the squad. The real issue there was not the interview but was especially the fact that Chelsea and Enzo couldn’t agree on a new contract, and they are still not close to reaching any agreement on a new contract.

Of course, Chelsea have a major part to play in this as well. And Real Madrid have not made any official approach yet. As Romano said:

So I’m sure that Real Madrid remains kind of dream move for those around Enzo Fernandez. But at the same time, there is Chelsea. So at the moment from Chelsea, the situation is very silent and very quiet because Chelsea didn’t receive any official bid or any official approach from Real Madrid. The focus at Real Madrid in this moment is on different players, but the appreciation for Enzo Fernandez is for sure something guaranteed.

Could Enzo Fernandez leave Chelsea this summer?

It would be safe to say that Fernandez is one of the most important players in this Chelsea team. So, if he did end up leaving, the club will need to bring in a replacement, which won’t be easy.

On the other hand, Real Madrid will need to pay a fee in the region of £120 million to convince Chelsea to part ways with Fernandez. So, this is not going to be simple, whichever way you look at it.

Of course, when a player is interested in leaving, it is always a possibility. You simply do not want an unhappy player to be a part of your team, even if he is an elite talent.

So, Chelsea will have a decision to make on their hands as well. But as things stand, it is very possible that Fernandez ends up staying.

The arrival of Xabi Alonso should help soften his stance a bit. The Spaniard has shown that he can work with youngsters and still produce results, which he did at Bayer Leverkusen. And hopefully, the Blues will start moving in the right direction from here on forward.
