Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th last season, narrowly avoiding relegation in a race that dragged on to the final game of the campaign. That means that Spurs will be looking to strengthen their roster as much as possible this summer. They have already agreed to bring in Marcos Senesi and have personal terms in place with Jan Paul van Hecke, both defenders Chelsea were linked with in the not too distant past.
On the other hand, Spurs will also be looking to strengthen their forward line. And in a surprising turn of events, it looks like they have one of Chelsea’s forwards on their radar.
This Chelsea team is not particularly known for its quality going forward. Just look at the goalless run they had towards the end of last season.
Yet, it looks like Liam Delap is someone who is on Tottenham Hotspurs’ radar going into the summer transfer window. According to GIVEMESPORT, Ben Jacobs said while speaking on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel:
“I think that Liam Delap could be one to watch from Chelsea, another club that Tottenham wouldn’t normally do too much business with.
“Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham, the three clubs that like Delap. Before we can clarify whether anything is going to develop there, Delap wants to stay and fight for his place, so he’s going to understand where he is in this pecking order, with Joao Pedro number one under Xabi Alonso, who is going to be the number two striker?
“Is it still going to be Delap? Is it alternatively going to be Nico Jackson, who’s coming back from a loan spell at Bayern? I think unlikely, but Jackson wants pre-season to see if he can change the new manager’s mind.
“Once all that falls into place, if Delap is available on the market, Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham are the three Premier League clubs I’m hearing.”
Tottenham want to sign Delap from Chelsea
If the move does happen, it would be a rare one. In recent times, we have rarely seen players move between those two clubs.
That is very interesting, to be honest. Yes, there is an understanding that the two are London rivals. That being said, players have switched between Chelsea and Arsenal frequently without any problems.
What does the future hold for Delap? Time shall tell. It would be an understatement to say that his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge was a disappointment.
Delap managed to score just one goal in the Premier League all season. That is not what Chelsea would have expected when they shelled out £30 million to sign him from Ipswich Town.
Spurs signing Delap would not be bad for the Blues
Despite Delap’s poor debut season, it looks like there is still quite a bit of interest in him. On the other hand, reports have suggested that Chelsea would look for around £40 million to part ways.
If Chelsea are able to fetch £40 million for a striker that scored one league goal last season, then fair play to them. It might just be the modern transfer market in England.
With Nicolas Jackson coming back and Emmanuel Emegha’s impending arrival, there might not be much of a role for Delap next season.
So, it would make sense for Chelsea to accept a significant offer if it does come in this summer. Let’s see if that arrives or not.
