Chelsea have moved into the next stage of their push for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria.
The Blues are now in club-to-club discussions with Rayo over the 28-year-old. Fabrizio Romano reported the talks, while Sky Sports has also examined why Chavarria appeals to Xabi Alonso.
It is not a glamour pursuit. It is a practical one.
Chelsea have already strengthened the right side with Marco Palestra. ReadChelsea has covered how Palestra’s arrival gives Alonso a new right-sided option, but the left flank still needs work after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid.
Alonso Gets A Clear Left-Side Option
Chavarria’s profile explains Chelsea’s interest.
He is experienced, left-footed and used to regular La Liga football. Transfermarkt lists him as contracted to Rayo until 2030, which gives the Spanish club a strong negotiating position.
The appeal is clear enough.
Alonso needs a left-sided defender who can cover ground, defend repeated transitions and still carry possession high up the pitch. Chavarria fits that more functional brief.
The key issue is price.
Rayo are protected by contract length, so Chelsea will need the numbers to stay sensible. If they do, this could become the sort of low-fuss signing that balances a squad loaded with younger, higher-risk profiles.
For Chelsea, the logic is not about statement value. It is about giving Alonso a senior left-back who can help straight away.
